The University of Kentucky - Biology Department outreach - BioBonanza

BioBonanza is a one day open-house event at the Biology Department on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington. We are targeting families as well as middle/high schools students and for the first edition last year we had around 25 hands-on activities put together by more than 80 volunteers who welcomed more than 450 event-goers. It was amazing (see picture above)!

Coming to BioBonanza is discovering what is happening at the university in the biological sciences and having the opportunity to directly interact with the researchers themselves, from the laboratory directors, to the post docs, to the graduate students, to the undergraduate students, everybody is there to welcome you. This year we are building a committee to carry out BioBonanza organization when I will leave UK.

I am proud to have created this event with Jacqueline Dillard. Our effort stemmed both from Dr. Crowley's outreach class in fall 2015 and from Jacqueline's experience at Cornell with Insectapolooza. Since then, we came a long way to build our own event bringing science and teaching to anyone willing to come and see. Thankfully, I had a team of volunteer board member helping me putting this event together for its second edition this past 14th of October! My team included Sruthi Purushothaman (Direct Donation Coordinator), Sandeep Saxena (In-Kind Donation Coordinator), Tim Salzman (Activities Manager), Ben Cloud (Communications and Advertising Manager), Jacqueline Dillard (Graphic Design Coordinator), Kat Sasser (Social Media Coordinator), and John Terbot (Volunteer and Community Manager). Finally, I wanted to thank the whole Biology Department for their participation last year and this year. Without them there would be no event so it is important to remember them.
